MC YALLAH & DEBMASTER

Of Kenyan origin but born and raised in Kampala, MC Yallah is a powerful force in the hip-hop scene, with nearly twenty years of experience. A central member of the influential Nyege Nyege collective, she blends conscious and futuristic hip-hop with grime, punk and trap, creating a distinctive and personal sound.

Known for her fast and tightly controlled flow, she moves between Kiswahili, Luganda, English and Luo, often drawing from personal experiences and addressing themes related to women, integrity and self-determination. In recent years MC Yallah has ignited international dancefloors across Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, Kenya and Uganda.

Her debut album Kubali, released on Hakuna Kulala and produced by Debmaster, was listed among The Wire’s top 50 albums of 2019. Her second album, Yallah Beibe, produced by Debmaster, Scotch Egg and Chrisman, was released in 2023 on Hakuna Kulala.

Debmaster, a French producer based in Berlin, is behind many of the productions released on Hakuna Kulala. His musical practice moves between radical electronics and rhythmic experimentation, and is closely connected to projects within the Nyege Nyege scene. His collaboration with MC Yallah began around 2018 with the EP Ndi Mukazi, followed by Kubali.
