Crossbeats
with musicians, choreographers, and storytellers Laura Agnusdei (IT), Vincenzo Castellana (IT/NL), Idio Chichava (MOZ), Kale Kamine (MOZ), Roberta Maimone (IT/NL), Venancio Mbande (MOZ), and Osvalda Nhacune (MOZ).
This is an artistic residency that began in a mixed format in April 2026, with its first public presentation scheduled for June 18th. Starting with the title, “Crossbeats” evokes the intersection and crossing of cultures and traditions, suggesting contamination and dialogue between genres, with a direct reference to the musical dimension.
The project aims to connect transdisciplinary artists—specifically musicians, dancers, and storytellers—starting from the study and promotion of local artistic traditions to experiment with new contemporary languages. This transdisciplinary artistic co-production revolves around the Timbila, a musical instrument and artistic dance practice that is part of Mozambican cultural heritage.
This approach connects to the research of Lina Bo Bardi, who recognized in craftsmanship and folk traditions not a minor form, but an artistic synthesis capable of generating new cultural imaginaries. Similarly, it recalls the thought of Antonio Gramsci, who conceived popular culture not as a static heritage, but as a living and dynamic process, continually reworked and transformed through collective practices. Working with a contemporary gaze on traditional artistic forms thus becomes a way to engage new generations with an often forgotten past, while simultaneously strengthening the sense of belonging and community through multidisciplinary artistic languages.
Crossbeats is the result of a collaborative effort between Italy, the Netherlands, and Mozambique, carried out by Forevergreen (IT), Amsterdam Fringe (NL), and Agape Mozambique (MZ), also thanks to the support of the European program Connect & Create, promoted by Alliance Française and Goethe-Institut and supported by the European Union.

He began his artistic journey through traditional Mozambican practices, developing a unique choreographic language that intertwines body, rhythm, collective presence, and memory.
